A wrinkle can be described as a crease, ridge, or fold on the skin. Wrinkles naturally appear as we age, generally due to the skin becoming less elastic and thinner over time.
A study of 2,000 women in the United States found that more than a quarter (28%) of women under the age of 25 regularly worry about signs of aging. This figure increases to 42% for women between the ages of 25 and 35, and to 54% for women aged 35 to 44.
In addition to aging, there are a number of different causes of wrinkles, which we will highlight in this blog post. We will also look at how to prevent premature aging. Let’s get started.
What Are the Different Causes of Wrinkles?
As we have already noted, aging is a primary cause of wrinkles, due to both the fact that skin becomes less elastic and thinner as we age.
Another big cause of wrinkles is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV radiation speeds up the natural aging process and is a major cause of early wrinkling. When our skin is exposed to UV light, the connective tissue starts to break down, causing our skin to lose its flexibility and strength.
Smoking is a cause of many health ailments and conditions, including wrinkles. It is believed that due to smoking’s effect on collagen, which is part of the skin’s connective tissue, cigarettes can accelerate the aging process.
The popular saying that ‘wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been’ is quite true, too. Repeated facial expressions, such as smiling or squinting, can lead to wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. If there is any ‘good cause’ of wrinkles, we would definitely say it is this one!
How to Prevent Wrinkles
Protecting your skin from the sun is a good practice, especially in the midday sun. Always use sunscreen when out in the sun and don’t forget to wear sunglasses, hats, and long-sleeved shirts when exposed to strong sunlight. It’s helpful to use a skin-care product that has ‘built-in- sun protection factor.
As we have noted already, avoiding smoking can help to reduce the onset of premature wrinkles. Eating a healthy and balanced diet, with plenty of vegetables and fruits, is also recommended.
